Giant Cretan Dakos Claims Guinness Record

dakos_KretaCretans say they made the world’s biggest dakos – a local specialty – a giant work of 7.45 meters, mixing together vegetables with rusks for the treat that Greeks love, and claiming they set a Guinness World Record for the work presented the night of Aug. 25 in Chania.
The dakos was done in the shape of the island and contained 160 kilos (352.74 pounds) of dough, 50 kilos (110.23 pounds) of mizithra cheese, 100 kilos (220.46 pounds) of tomatoes, 20 kilos (44.09 pounds) of olive oil, and lots of oregano. The making was filmed to be sent for verification for a record.
The giant rusk was produced by Fourakis Bakery in Kolymbari in Chania to mark its 30th anniversary.
The initiative of the creation of the giant dakos was by the Cultural Club of Chania, named To Rodo (The Rose). As the President of the club, Nikos Mathioudakis, stated: “Regardless of whether the dakos will be included in Guinness world records, the club’s aim is that the Cretan diet, through this specific action as well, will surpass the country’s borders and become known everywhere.”
