The British ambassador congratulated the Ministry of Shipping on Greece’s continued progress in the struggle against illegal immigration, and welcomed the initiative of the Minister of Marine and Aegean Sea to create reception areas for illegal immigrants, which will ensure respect for human dignity.
The British diplomat was briefed on the level of cooperation between the Greek and Turkish coastguards and on the communication involving several incidents on the border between the two countries.
Varvitsiotis asked Kittmer for an even closer cooperation between Britain and Greece, stressing that Britain is extremely valuable for Greece.
On August 30, the Minister of Shipping is expected to go to Mytilene where he will meet with people from the local organizations of the island to discuss several issues, especially that of illegal immigration.
The illegal immigration problem is expected to become more serious due to the geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
