Greek Unemployment Up Again – 27.6%

unemployment22Greece’s jobless rate is continuing its unrelenting rise, setting another record for May of 27.6 percent, up 0.6 from the previous reporting period and with nearly 1.4 million people out of work.
The data came from the European Union’s statistics agency Eurostat which showed Greece maintained the dubious position of having the highest unemployment rate in the 28-country bloc, with Spain second at 26.3 percent.
As shown by community data, the average unemployment in the 17-country Eurozone in July was 12.1 percent while for the EU overall it remained at 11 percent. The lowest rates were in Austria (4.8%), Germany (5.3%) and Luxembourg (5.7%).
As far as individual performances of Greece are concerned, the unemployment percentage for men was at 24,6 percent, for women it was 31.6 percent and for young people below 25 years old it was 62.9 percent, down 1.6 percent from previously but still a staggering number that has forced many young to flee their country for jobs and a better life elsewhere.
The average rate of unemployment in the Eurozone in July for men was 11.9 percent, for women at 12.2 percent and for young people below 25 years old at 24 percent, that is 3.5 million individuals.
Seventeen EU countries saw their jobless rate decline this July compared to last year and 11 saw it rise. The countries which had the biggest unemployment increase within a year were Cyprus (from 12.2% to 17.3%), Greece (from 23.8% to 27.6%) and Slovenia (from 9.3% to 11.2%).
