Crossing Guards Occupy Interior Ministry

5AE799687B3ADD4CC0F5552449F82969Among the first to be transferred or fired underĀ  a so-called mobility scheme, school crossing guardsĀ  in Greece sat in at the Ministry of the Interior on the morning of Sept. 4 in a protest the government said would be fruitless.
They demanded not to be transferred or fired but wanted a guarantee to be kept as Greece sets about getting rid of 25,000 workers over the next two years on the orders of international lenders.
The first to go are in the lower-paid sectors,Ā  also including janitors, school nurses, teachers and municipal police officer while managers, consultants and Parliament workers have been protected by the government and exempted.
The guards met with Minister Yannis Michelakis and they are expected to meet with other officials from the Ministry as well. Michelakis told Mega TV that, “We have arranged to meet with school wardens in the day and we are looking for jobs for them to work.” Meanwhile, municipal police officers and union representatives of local government employee unions (POE-OTA) were protesting outside the Ministry of Administrative Reform.
