Metro Tunneling to Piraeus Starts

metro tunnelingThe TBM, Hipppodamus, started from the region Agia Varvara, for the tunneling of the extension of the Athens Metro Line 3 to Piraeus.
The opening of the tunnel will take approximately 2,5 years. It will be 6,5 kilometers long and it will pass from the metro stations Agia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Piraeus and Dimotiko Theatro,  which are under construction.
According to the Attiko Metro S.A., TBM, Hippodamus was named after  the great ancient Greek urban planner, Hippodamus of Miletus. Archeological research carried out at the Dimotiko Theatro square, in the framework of the Metro project, reveals elements of the system of Hippodamus in the ancient city of Piraeus. The tunneling works are starting on time, as provided by the schedule of the project and this was made possible thanks to the great effort of the Attiko Metro, the manufacturing consortium of the project and especially thanks to all the employees who achieved the assembly of the machine in a record time.
“Today’s starting of the TBM from Agia Varvara to Pireaus, signifies the existence of a country that works, produces and can hope. The large projects are an important lever for the development of the country,” the Secretary General of Public Works, Stratos Simopoulos, stated.
The president and chief executive of the Attiko Metro Christos Tsitouras, stressed that another large project is in full swing and with its completion, this project will upgrade Piraeus and its port while it will serve the residents of all the municipalities where the new stations are constructed.
