    by -

tsigganoiThe decision of the Municipality of Acharne in Athens to demolish illegal properties in the area, most of which belong to the Roma, caused their intense reaction.

The tension lasted 24 hours. The Mayor of Acharne, Sotiris Douros, said that on September 10 the municipality proceeded to demolish 14 buildings on Kyprou street, near OSE.

Douros said, “There are strong reactions, but we don’t back down.”

This morning, the building owners and their supporters set fire and made barricades using cans.

I can understand both sides. Maybe a compromise where the Roma can pay all the back property tax, plus a penalty to the Greek state? That way it’s win-win? They can keep their homes, plus the Greek state gets badly needed revenue.
