14 Confirmed Cases of West Nile Virus in Xanthi

west nile virusThe number of confirmed cases of the West Nile Virus (WNV) in Xanthi, Greece, has reached 14, which is increasing dramatically from week to week.
According to ThrakiToday, a total of ten cases has been recorded so far inĀ  the municipalities of Xanthi and Topeiros, five in Xanthi and five in Topeiros, four of which attacked the patientsā€™ central nervous system, while the other six did not.
In the municipality of Avdera, one case with symptoms of infection of the central nervous system and three more without infection were recorded.
A total of 65 confirmed cases of the WNV have been recorded throughout Greece, of which 21 cases were in the regional units of Xanthi and Kavala. In the municipality of Kavala, the confirmed cases are three, and in the municipality of Nestos they are four.
According to the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (HDCP), throughout Greece, three elderly people that were found positive to the virus, lost the battle for life, among whom, one lived in Xanthi.
She was an elderly woman of more than 100 years old, with a burdened medical history, who entered the General Hospital of Xanthi after the infection by the WNV. Her organism did not last and she passed away.
ThrakiToday talked about the importance of timely mosquito control by the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace, reporting that the health of tens of citizens has been put at risk.
The money spent on hospitalizing the patients infected by the WNV is multiple the cost compared to timely mosquito control, through effective spraying.
As far as the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace is concerned, in the last three years, spraying has been dramatically delayed.
