KOPER, Slovenia – Rebounding from two straight losses, Greece beat European champion Spain, 79-75 at Eurobasket 2013 to keep its hopes of winning another title alive.

In a thrilling battle, Greece came back to take a two-point lead at 66-64 on Yannis Bourousis’ free throws with only 4:09 to go.

The Greeks then played tough defense down the stretch, blocking a Sergio Rodriguez lay-up and on the next Greek possession scored from down low to make 68-64 with 3:31 on the clock.
Greece had to come from behind in the second and fourth quarters and Vassilis Spanoulis was the player to spearhead the charge both times, coming off a lackluster first and third quarters to finish with a game high 20 points, three assists and four rebounds.
Spain shot much better from the floor, especially during the first three quarters and was nearly perfect from the free throw line, but Greece scored a crucial 19 points off Spain’s 17 turnovers. The Greeks also got much more help in scoring from their bench players.
Greece now still has a chance for a spot in the quarter-finals by finally beating their old nemesis.
