Greek ICU's Close 200 Beds

tromaktikoAccording to the President of the Hellenic Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Dr Apostolos Armaganidis, for the first time Greece has proceeded to more than 200 ICU bed closures because of staff shortages.
In the Attikon Hospital only 13 out of 27 beds operate at a time when so many patients are fighting for their lives.
The average number in Europe is 12 ICU beds per 100,000 of the population, while in Greece there is only half the number, that is six per 100,000 of the population.
Experts now expect staff recruitment through KEELPNO, so they can open at least 60 to 70 beds to be able to treat patients.
However, there is a dramatic lack of staff in Greece and not only in intensive care units, but in almost every department. Moreover, one of the main problems associated with the lack of staff is the phenomenon of sepsis as well.
The condition occurs in about 82,000 patients annually, who without immediate medication run the risk of dying. As Dr. Evangelos Giammarellos, a professor at the Attikon Hospital Pathology Department stressed, if these patients are not given the right treatment, approximately 35% to 40 % will eventually die from sepsis.
