Inspectors Hunting Uninsured Workers

Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis warned employers with uninsured workers that they face very stiff fines which will be imposed on the spot.
“I am issuing a final warning,” Vroutsis told the state-run Athens Macedonia News Agency on Saturday. “From tomorrow, Sunday, (Sept. 15) 1,000 inspectors … will fan across the country, imposing fines of up to 10,550 euros for every uninsured worker.”
Data from the Labor Ministry also suggests that the number of people registered for social security coverage as new employees shot up in the run-up to the sweep. By Sept. 13, some 9,486 new workers were registered with the ministry, representing the highest-ever record of new employment for the month.
