Greece named an engineer with long experience in public service to head its struggling privatization agency Saturday, more than a month after the previous chairman was removed for conflict of interest.
In a statement, the finance ministry said it would recommend Constantinos Maniatopoulos, currently head of the state property management agency, to the position. His formal appointment is still subject to approval by the Parliament.
Mr. Maniatopoulos, born in 1941, has held a number of leadership positions in various public bodies and private companies, many in the energy field. These have included positions as head of the state-controlled company managing the port of Athens, and as chairman and chief executive of one of Greece’s largest petroleum retailers. Between 1986 and 1995, Mr. Maniatopoulos served as director general of the European Commission’s energy department.
