Two years after EOPYY’s start up, the Ministry of Health is looking carefully at how it can remain viable. There are three dominant scenarios, the first of which involves transferring 6,000 employees to the National Healthcare System’s Health Centers and to other primary care services.
The second one involves EOPYY’s closure aiming at the establishment of a new service provider. According to the third scenario, EOPYY could turn into a buyer of healthcare service. In this way, EOPYY would be based on private diagnostic centers and clinics to cover the needs of its policy holders.
The vital decision for EOPYY will be taken when the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis returns from Austria. The committee led by professor Kyriakos Souliotis, is aiming to merge primary healthcare units, namely the EOPYY polyclinics, with the Health Centers and operate them on a 24-hour basis.
The lack of staff in healthcare has had a serious impact on the operation of Intensive Care Units around the country. According to the president of the Athens and Piraeus Hospital Doctor Union (EINAP) Matina Pagoni, approximately 200 fully-equipped ICU beds are unavailable at the moment.
