Golden Dawn Suspect in Commie Attack in Court

Golden Dawn partyAs the Greek government tries to dismantle the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party through legal means, arresting its hierarchy on an array of criminal charges, one of its members was due in court on Oct. 4 after being arrested on charges of leading a violent assault by party members on a group of nine Communists in the neighborhood of Perama near Piraeus.
The suspect is also charged in connection with an attack on a group of Egyptian fishermen in Perama in the summer of 2012 as the party was being seated in Parliament and critics said began a 15-month rampage of violence on immigrants, gays, Communists, leftists and other targets.
According to police, the 34-year-old suspect telephoned Giorgos Patelis, the head of GD’s Nikaia chapter, after the murder of leftist rapper Pavlos Fyssas last month. Patelis is in pre-trial detention.
Testimony by witnesses to the Perama assault has also implicated the party’s Member of Parliament for Piraeus, Yiannis Lagos, who is also in detention pending trial. One witness said he saw Lagos arrive at the scene shortly after the beating, which left nine KKE people in hospital, and start shouting at police who had subsequently raided the Perama offices of Golden Dawn.
