Syrian Immigrants Swim to Kastelorizo

kastelorizoSyrian refugees, driven out of their country by war, are trying to cross the Turkish-Greek border to seek asylum in the European Union. Greece is suffering from the financial crisis and cannot accept this number of people, therefore the Greek authorities take a tough stance with respect to illegal immigrants. Despite these efforts, refugees continue their attempts to cross the Aegean, in an effort to flee from Syria.
Yesterday, after 1:30 pm, four Syrians passed in Kastelorizo by swimming from the Turkish coasts. They reached an isolated beach on the island but police arrested them.
The last few months Kastelorizo as well as other Greek islands of the Dodecanese (twelve islands) recorded an increase of illegal immigrants, even with the stricter measures of the Greek police and coast guard.
