Troika once again brings about the discussion regarding the proposal of shutting down 22 airports in Greece. Just a few months ago the Greek ministry had rejected this proposal by the Troika, as it caused plenty of reactions- especially in the border islands, which would be affected by its implementation.
However, according to information, the suggestion has been brought back to the Greek Government only a few months after being rejected by the ministry. In fact, the proposal is concerning the airports serving remote islands and popular tourist destinations. These airports are: Sitia , Alexandroupoli, Araxos, Kalamata, Neos Aghialos, Lemnos, Chios, Kastoria, Kozani, Ioannina, Skyros, Syros, Ikaria, Leros, Karpathos, Naxos, Paros, Melos, Kythera, Astypalaia, Castelorizo and Kasos.
Concerning the airport of Sitia, the suggestion has been made by the German airline company Lufthansa and the German Councilors of State.
The same sources say that the proposal already meets strong resistance, as the closure of these airports would exclude thousands of people living on the border islands and the decision would obstruct any attempt for tourism development.
