More than 20,000 Athenians are Hungry and Homeless

Athens_homeless On October 16th, Mayor of Athens Giorgos Kaminis along with the administration of the Reception and Solidarity Centre of the Municipality of Athens, presented the first big social survey concerning the most vulnerable groups of people in Athens, as well as the initiatives undertaken in order to deal with poverty and social exclusion.
The survey, published on October 17, was in light of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and carried out by the scientific staff of the Reception and Solidarity Centre of the Municipality of Athens. Among the people who use the social services of the municipality and its results, will contribute to the development and establishment of new social structures in Athens.
Despite a 60% decrease in resources, today, more than 20,000 Athenians are supported by the municipal authority, and also from charities and mutual aid of the people.
Referring to the survey’s figures, the Mayor of Athens underlined, that among the homeless 77% are men, 54% are Greeks, and 46% are foreigners. Twenty-four% of these homeless people do not have family, and 61% are addicted to drugs.  The percentage of homeless aged 26-55, is 76%.
In regards to food rations that the Reception and Solidarity Centre carries out, 73% of Greeks who are given meals have been unemployed for around 2 years, 41% came to receive food rations in the last six months; 46% are between 36- 55 -years-old; 50% are not married; 7.5% have a high level degree, and 0.7% have a master’s degree.
