Maria Callas' House in Need of Repair

maria callas houseMaria Calla’s house, a neoclassical building on 61 Patision and Skaramaga street, is being damaged year after year. The only hope for its rescue, is the interest of Athens Municipality.
After being questioned from Elias Panagiotaros, MP of Golden Dawn, Yannis Vroutsis said “recently, Athens Municipality has shown interest towards the building and the administration of ΝΑΤ (Merchant Seamen’s Fund) and is waiting for the submission of proposals in order to evaluate them.”
According to Vroutsis, “the building has been severely damaged by the earthquake in Athens in September 1999 and a large expenditure is required for its repair, which given the area’s degradation and the real estate crisis, is considered unprofitable.
According to the Deputy Minister of Culture, John Adrianos, this is an important sample of an apartment building of the period 1921-1932. It is considered as a historical monument and it is protected by the law for the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage.
The Greek law commands that the owners of such buildings must ensure the immediate execution of maintenance work, without undue delay, at their own expense. However, it seems that until today, neither a restoration study, nor an application for change of use,  has been submitted to the appropriate authorities.
