VPRC: Greek Students Uncertain of Future

eGreek students seem to be ambivalent towards European Union, disappointed from politics, and pessimistic for their professional future according to VPRC research called “Europe of young people.” At the same time they dream of having a better quality of life over the next five years. The research was held on account of Ellinogermaniki Agogi. The results were presented at an event that took place in the Old Parliament building (Palea Vouli).

“We must give hope to young people” underlined Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament.
Mr. Schulz also mentioned that “it is necessary for all European countries to stay united, in order for us to have a Europe of solidarity. That is a great challenge for the governments all over Europe.”
He also commented on the rise of neo-Nazi parties: “More social and economic justice is the answer to the rise of fascism in Europe.”
The sample chosen for the research was mainly consisted of high school students. The results of the research showed that young people of Greece do not believe that their country will exit economic crisis in the near future. They also believe that the vision of a strong Europe fades.
The major problem that young people face in Greece according to VPRC is “unemployment.”  Sixty-three percent of the sample seems to be pessimistic as far as its professional future is concerned, whereas only 37 percent seem to be optimistic.
In addition, when the students were asked to answer the question of  possibly immigrating to find better job opportunities, 61 percent of the respondents answered that they wished to stay and work in Greece while the 37 percent wanted to live and work abroad.
However, astonishingly high, is the percentage of frustrated young people because of the indifference of the Greek governments to solve their problems. There is also an increase in those who believe that reactions like strikes, public demonstrations and marches could be an effective way of social demonstration.
