Amnesty Worried About Greek Military Service

military_serviceAmnesty International denounced Greece for a “wave of prosecutions of conscientious objectors.” On Monday, the warden declared that prosecution and punishment of Greeks who denied to respond to their military duties “violates their right to freedom of conscience.”
The organization also expressed apprehension for “the punitive nature” of an eventual alternative social service in Greece. This lasts for 15 months and its duration is much longer than the determined nine months of military service, while the majority of conscripts serve in the army.
Additionally, Amnesty was informed about five Greeks who have been arrested and punished for their conscientious objection this year.
