Int’l Conference focuses on Repatriation of Parthenon Marbles

Parthenon-marblesAndrew Douglas Alexander Thomas Bruce is the descendant of Lord Elgin, who stole the Parthenon marbles in the 19th century. The 11th Earl of Elgin has an entire ancient Greek throne and a sarcophagus in excellent condition, decorated in his castle in Edinburgh.

In an interview, he declared “my ancestor took away the marbles in an effort to save them,” adding that “in my life I have met Greece with a different view from Melina Mercouri on marbles issue. For this reason, I still think that I do not have to restore my ancestor’s memory.”

Moreover, on October 23-27, the 3rd International Conference of Experts on the return of Cultural Property took place, focusing on the Parthenon Marbles repatriation. The opening ceremony was accommodated in the auditorium of the Acropolis Museum, while the rest of the sessions took place in Ancient Olympia (SPAP Conference Center). The Minister of Culture and Sport, Panos Panagiotopoulos stated, “the reunification of the Parthenon marbles is a deeply ecumenical and humanitarian issue.”

Recently, UNESCO submitted a letter to the British Minister of Foreign Affairs and Culture and to the Director of the British Museum as well, informing them about the demands of the Greek side. The issue comes in the International Intergovernmental Conference of UNESCO which is going to be held November in Paris.

Even if his ancestors “stole” these marbles (which I’ve only seen hearsay not proof), that doesn’t make him responsible. This isn’t the Old Testament where our sins are passed by blood.

And UNESCO shouldn’t be submitting any letters. It should be abolished along with the rest of the UN.

  • Lazaros

How did the marbles get to England if they weren’t stolen? Did Pericles commission monuments in the Elgin castle?

Greece was ruled by the Turks of the Ottoman Empire for part of the 19th century. So who stole what from who exactly?

Maybe the marbles should be returned to Turkey. *rolls eyes*

  • Lazaros

Ahhhh yes. We must give our surplus history to cover their defecit.

  • MAKEDONSKA AKROPOLA

  • MAKEDONSKA AKROPOLA

Marbles were NOT stolen. Lord Elgin has bouhgt them from the legal owner of that time – the Turkish Osmanli Sultan.

Another group that needs to use Greek history to build a culture. I will miss my skopjian friends when they get absorbed by Greater Albania.

    They stole Chinese items too.

  • Anonymous

We would try to return them to you, but unfortunately the communists stole mainland China. Maybe we will return the items to the legitimate Chinese government in Taiwan instead.

  • ProudtobeAlbanian

I wonder how did Greece get to where it is at this point if they are so smart? If things continue to go as they are currently maybe there will be no Greece at all. I guess this is a punishment from God since you people are so racist and you think so highly of yourselves. You have to remember that the past is the past, and no one cares as much about it, it will be remembered in History, and also in Economics as a good example of how a country can go downhills if bad decisions are made by “Smart people”. This is to remind you guys that no one cares about Greece anymore because there is no interest in the country itself, and you do not play a big role in World politics anymore. You are still in the EU just because Germany, France and England do not want you to get out because if you get out, other countries that are in the EU that are not doing as well, will do the same thing, and there might not be an EU.

  • ShekelGoldbergstein

    What a waste of time.

  • MAKEDONSKA AKROPOLA

Why? Real money were paid for the marbles! If someone pays with money for something – is barred as it’s private property.
If you have anything to object – address the salesmen – Turks. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA…
