According to the newspaper “Proto Thema,” Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos, the Greek Minster of Education has taken the issue of closed universities to court. Nearly a week ago, Arvanitopoulos, gave an ultimatum to the rectors of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the University of Athens (UOA) to open the institutions, so that the academic semester won’t be cancelled.
Since the rectors did not respond, the Minister, representing the State and defending the public and national interest, brings an action before the competent court so that the strike of universities is called illegal and abusive.
At the same time, Theodosis Pelegrinis, rector of Athens University, maintains his position, while it has been decided that the courses in NTUA will start on Monday.
The Athens University announced–“The rector and the senate of University of Athens shall take all measures to ensure the functioning of the university. The issue that has arisen is due to the strike of the administrative employees assigned to a non-active status. Their number exceeds 48% of the university personnel.”
It is marked that the Ministers of Education and Administrative Reform, as well as the Supreme Court are informed but have not yet dealt with the problem.
Meanwhile, the 276 administrative employees of the universities who refused to be inventoried, will face disciplinary offenses of violation of duty, severe disobedience, and non-inventory.
