Cyprus: Call For Missing Persons

nikos_anastasiadisNikos Anastasiades, the Republic of Cyprus president, addressed a call to anyone who might know or have information about places where missing Turkish Cypriots, or missing Greek Cypriots who died during the years 1963-63 during the invasion of 1974, are buried. This information will help the authorities and the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) find some answers.

In a written statement the Cypriot president underlines that “every day that passes the time limits, in order for the search to be fruitful and to trace all the missing persons become narrower. We must now act with determination, to find and open the graves, to give answers to the missing persons’ relatives about what happened to them, and thus to heal all the wounds of the past.”
The matter of the missing persons, he mentions, is the most tragic aspect of the Cypriot people’s drama that has been alive for some decades now.
“The families of the missing persons suffer daily from this drama, more than any other Cypriot citizen. For half a century, anyone who has lost a loved one during the events of 1963-1964, or for almost forty years since the invasion has lost their traces, suffering from agony, uncertainty, doubt and fear for the fate of their beloved ones,” he mentions in his statement.
The Cypriot President clarifies, that he expects the Turkish Government to respect all the legal obligations and commitments required in order to contribute to the solution of this gigantic and aged issue of human drama, by granting access to the files of Turkish army, and by letting CMP enter the military territories in the northern part of the island that is under Turkish occupation.
