This year’s security measures for the 40th anniversary of the Polytechnic students uprising will be more strict than the previous years.
According to officials of the police, this year there will be a large number of policemen in the building of ERT in Agia Paraskevi, and in local organizations of Golden Dawn in various areas of Athens–mostly the decentralized ones–in order to prevent possible attacks.
Moreover, the building of Athens Polytechnic University, after the completion of the events, will be guarded perimetrically and externally by police forces for the prevention of a possible building occupation.
Athens will resemble a “fortress,” as about 6,000 police officers will be on the streets and especially in key points of the capital such as the parliament, government ministries, and embassies. Helicopters of the Greek Police will be low-flying to oversee the mobilization of protesters, giving directions to ground forces. Police will also be realizing preventive detentions.
On Sunday, when the event will initiate, there will be changes in bus routes, and many metro stations will be closed for security reasons.

Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy, sending an e-mail to the American citizens that live in Greece, gives “safety guidelines” for the 40th anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising.
The U.S. embassy advises American citizens that live in Athens to avoid the area between Syntagma and the U. S. embassy, after 2 pm on Sunday. The same recommendation is made for the area around the Consulate of Thessaloniki and around universities across the country.
The message recommends the Americans to report incidents of violence in the U.S. Embassy in Athens and the Consulate of Thessaloniki and to take appropriate measures for their safety.
