Greece Taken to EU Court Again for Waste Water

european courtThe European Commission is once again taking Greece to the European Court for failing to comply with the directive on waste water treatment. The previous reference was in 2007 and 23 agglomerations were involved. However after the time-limits ended, only 6 Greek agglomerations had complied.
The Commission proposes a penalty of 11.5 million euros for the agglomerations of Nea Makri, Koropi, Markopoulo, Lefkimi, Artemida and Rafina that still don’t have urban waste water treatment plants. A daily fine of 47,000 euros was also proposed for each of the above cases until the country’s compliance.
Even though in the first 5 agglomerations treatment units have been launched, they will not be delivered until the end of 2015, while in the case of Artemida and Rafina no plans have been made for urban waste water treatment.
According to a Commission representative “The lack of treatment in these agglomerations means that the health of residents is being put at risk, as untreated wastewater can be contaminated with harmful bacteria and viruses.”
