Greek Former Minister Yiannos Papantoniou Suspect for Felony

Yannos PapantoniouGreek Former Defense Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou and his wife, Stavroula Kourakou, were asked to provide explanations to assist in the investigation of their assets.
As reported, Athens Corruption Prosecutor, Eleni Raikou, has called the former minister a suspect for violation of the law on assets and income declaration — a first degree felony.
His summoning refers to the assets and income declaration for the years 2009 and 2010.
Early in November, the Assistant Corruption Prosecutor, Popi Papandreou, had requested the criminal prosecution of the former PASOK minister for tax evasion amounting to 3 million euros.
The Financial and Economic Crime Unit (SDOE) had also found his wife, Stavroula Kourakou, guilty of tax evasion amounting to 1.333 million euros. According to the Lagarde list findings, Kourakou had deposited this amount into an HSBC bank in Geneva.
The new data came from a tax audit conducted by SDOE for the years 2009 and 2010. The couples bank accounts were opened during the framework of the investigation.
