Mitsotakis and Stournaras Bump Heads Over Taxation of Greeks

Ÿ

On Monday, the Greek Administrative Reform Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, said that he disagrees with the statements of the Greek Minister of Finances, Yiannis Stournaras — that Greek citizens are not paying enough taxes. As a matter of fact, Yiannis Stournaras mentioned last week, that the total State’s revenues coming from taxes were still lower than the eurozone average, something that caused reactions, even among government officials.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a different opinion on the matter and stated that “those who pay are overtaxed.”
The Greek Administrative Reform Minister also underlined that the taxation system is not functional and moreover unfair. “In Greece” he added, “we are badly taxed. Despite the measures that Greek governments have taken all these years to make a fair distribution of the load to the taxpayers, every systematic effort towards this direction has failed its purpose.”
Mitsotakis was also crystal clear about the current government’s durability. “The government should try to see out its four-year term. The government will not fall and if it were to fall, it should go down fighting.”
