Mother Faces Deportation after Losing her Child

Thessaloniki

A mother from Serbia, who lost her 13 year-old daughter a few days ago had to not only face the tragic death of her child but also a 30-days notice deportation order. After an intervention from the Greek Minister of Public Order, Nikos Dendias, the mother was allowed to extend her stay in Greece for another six months.
A protest will take place on Tuesday afternoon in the centre of Thessaloniki for the death of the unfortunate 13 year-old Sarah from Serbia.
“We need to stop the crimes caused by the coalition government and the Troika. One more innocent victim on the altar of the recession and the memorandums,” was underlined by one of the protesters. The 13-year-old Sarah took her last breath because her unemployed mother could not afford to pay the electricity bill and in order for them not to die from the cold, she used a brazier. The fumes from the brazier killed young Sarah while her mother came close to losing her life too. As a result of this incident, Sarah’s mother was arrested for negligence.
Moreover, the 54 year-old mother was confronted with the strict laws of the Greek State. Besides the loss of her daughter due to her inability to pay the electricity bill, she was served with a 30-day deportation notice to leave Greece as it appears she had issues with her residency papers. Eventually, the matter ended after Nikos Dendias intervened.
