Cow Herd Derails Train in Greece

train derailed
A train was derailed shortly after 11 a.m. on the Thessaloniki – Athens route. The train was going rather slow due to the abrupt turns of the rails in the area, something that eventually saved everyone on board.
The train collided with a herd of cows that were on the rails in the area of the Asopos river between Lianokladi and Tithorea in Central Greece. Two wagons were derailed, but fortunately there were no casualties due to the fact that both wagons didn’t tip over.
Later it was announced that the 120 passengers are in good health and are expected to continue their journey by bus. Firstly, they will be transferred to the Lianokladi station where they will change buses to continue their journey to Athens.
The railway line has been closed and OSE (Hellenic Railways Organization) crews are expected to arrive in order to restore it.
TRENOSE President Thanassis Ziliaskopoulos rushed to the sight of the accident. According to preliminary estimates it will take at least 5 hours to restore all the damages. All routes have been delayed.
