Free Electricity as a Solution to Smog Pollution

restrictions-fireplaceOne of the major problems currently facing Greek households is their inability to pay for heating. The prices of oil, electricity and natural gas have rocketed, to the extent that many Greeks can no longer afford to heat their homes. As a result many families have resorted to the use of fireplaces, with major consequences for the environment.
The Ministry of Environment, in order to deal with the problem of pollution, is planning to provide free electricity on days when the smog is excessive. It is expected that the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) will approve the initiative, which will have a retroactive effect but will only apply to those listed on DEI’s social tariff.
According to the plan, two days of free electricity will be provided for every one day that particulate concentrations exceed 150 micrograms per cubic meter of air. As reported, the funds to cover the electricity will come from the primary surplus.
Last weekend when weather conditions were milder than during the previous week, the meteorological service recorded particulate concentrations of 110 micrograms per cubic meter in Marousi.
The Environment Ministry has on several occasions requested that Athenians limit their use of fireplaces, however this has not resulted in any reduction as many people have no other option.
Temperatures in Attica are expected to drop from Monday, falling to between 4 and 14 degrees Celsius.
