Greek Expat's 150,000 Euros Wire Transfer Blocked

mistakidisGreek bureaucracy has once again left people speechless with its love of the rule-book. The Greek Croesus Artistotelis Mistakidis appears to be its newest victim. Greek authorities are just now slowly recovering from the Lagarde list scandal. There may be no money left for tax audits but Mr. Mistakidis, who doesn’t even reside in Greece was caught allegedly trying to evade taxes.
Aristotelis Mistakidis is currently richer than Spiros Latsis or Philip Niarchos. He was placed 418th in the “Forbes” list of 1,226 billionaires on the planet, making him the richest Greek in the world.
The Greek government has been harassing him and his family by blocking his wire transfer of 150,000 euros, sent in order to cover the expense of surgery required by a relative.
The 150,000 euros were diverted to the Greek control authorities and Mr. Mistakidis’ relative was forced to ask for a loan to cover his urgent medical costs. Mr. Mistakidis who resides permanently in Switzerland and France, could only watch in amazement at the absurdity of Greek bureaucracy.
Shocked, he spoke to a Greek official about his situation and said among other things, “…and then they expect us to invest in Greece.”
The Greek billionaire, who is chief executive and major shareholder of the Glencore company, has come to Greece at least twice in the last few months and has had private meetings with the Greek Prime Minister in the Maximos Mansion.
The Glencore company is not known to the general public but is a giant multinational company such as Nestlé, Credit Suisse or Roche. It is the largest ore and raw materials trading company in the world. It operates in over 40 countries in Europe, the Middle East, the USA, Australia and Asia, employing 53,000 people, about 3,000 of whom are based at the company’s headquarters in Baar, Switzerland.
