The Assize Court of Thessaloniki sentenced seven people today, including four police officers serving at Ano Polis. Specifically, Albanian citizens are condemned because they illegally obtained Greek citizenship through naturalization. The case was revealed after investigations made by Greek Police.
Meanwhile, there were charges against Albanians from 2000 to 2003 because they allowed their compatriots amounts up to 3,000 euros to obtain a certificate of filing documents for the acquisition of Greek citizenship.
The court imposed a prison sentence of seven years to the four policemen (two men and two women, of whom two were discharged and two others are still serving as Greek Police), a lawyer and an Albanian citizen, while other Albanians were sentenced to nine years imprisonment.
The convicted were released until the trial of the case on appeal, and their sentences have suspensive effect.
Their unlawful actions prove that they were a criminal organization and they were issuing false certificates.
Three other policemen sat in the dock and only an Albanian national were eventually acquitted.
One of the convicted policemen, who was head of the security department at that time, apologized and denied all the charges, claiming that he had no involvement with the foreigners. During the apologies made by the others, the policemen were blaming each other.
