Only a couple of days after a former transport minister, Michalis Liapis – who got booted from the New Democracy Conservatives for it – was charged with driving a luxury car with false license plates to avoid paying a road tax, a Golden Dawn candidate in the last parliamentary elections was arrested near Ioannina, in central Greece for the same offense.
Police said that Iason Bibos was driving a luxury SUV with fake plates. He had handed in his genuine license plates in 2012 in order to avoid paying the road tax, an assessment that was increased by the government as part of austerity measures and can cost drivers hundreds and thousands of euros for the privilege of having a car on the road. Many Greeks, unable to pay it, turned in their plates.
Bibos, who has reportedly broken ties with Golden Dawn, was to face a prosecutor as well although the exact charges weren’t immediately detailed.
