Antonis Samaras: SRM One of Greek EU Presidency's Main Priorities

Greek EU PresidencyGreece’s Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, said Friday that one of the main priorities of his country’s rotating EU Presidency will be to strike a deal with the European Parliament over the Single Resolution Mechanism agreed yesterday by Ecofin finance ministers.
Speaking at a press conference at the end of a two-day EU leaders Summit here in Brussels, Samaras said that the SRM decision “was a good first step” but added that “negotiations with the European Parliament must start immediately.”
The Greek prime minister also said that most EU leaders, while acknowledging that Europe is on a recovery path, were also aware of the divisions between countries in the north and south of the Union.
Samaras said that this divergence, including sky rocketing unemployment in some southern countries, will be a key issue of the Greek presidency.
Furthermore, he said that the Council had decided a package of measures for injecting liquidity in the real economy via the financing of the Small Medium Enterprises.
Samaras reiterated that 2014 will be a year of growth for his crisis-battered country, ending six consecutive years of recession.
“We are starting the presidency with a primary surplus, and 2014 will be a year we exit the crisis,” he said. “We have regained our credibility and this presidency will be an effective one.”
