Man Sets Himself on Fire in Athens

ekav ambulanceJust before 7am this morning, policemen on patrol in central Athens, Greece, came across a young man on fire at the junction of Agiou Meletiou and Acharnon.
According to eyewitnesses, the man bathed himself in flammable liquid and then deliberately set fire to himself. Policemen and passers-by attempted to extinguish the fire, but their efforts were in vain. An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A wallet with documents was found close by and Police have determined that he was a 28 year-old Iranian who lived on Aristotlous Street.
According to the Greek police the young man had been arrested for forgery of certificates and his movements restricted pending trial in early January. The Athens police are investigating the incident.
