Nymphaio: A Magical Winter Destination in Greece

Christmas_at_Nymfaio,_FlorinaNymphaio is a beautiful village outside Florina in  West Macedonia, Greece. It has been often included in “The Ten Most Beautiful Villages of Europe” travel guide lists, and has won UNESCO’s “Melina Mercouri International Prize” for the excellent management of the area’s cultural heritage and the surrounding natural environment.
Nymphaio is built in a clearing, surrounded by dense forests at an altitude of 1,360 metres. Its unique architecture, the impressive mansion houses made of stone, the stone streets and the natural beauty captivate visitors. The village maintains its character as the new buildings strictly follow traditional architecture.
The nearby villages and lakes, Zazari and Cheimaditida, delimit an area of exceptional natural beauty in Florina. Nymphaio is a beautiful and exciting place that offers visitors unique experiences. At the same time, it is a great example of gentle and careful tourism development in the last two decades. The two natural lakes are worth visiting as they are two of the biggest in Florina, Greece. They host hundreds of species of birds, mammals and fishes as well as the ferruginous duck, which is protected as an endangered species.
Apart from the dreamy landscape, Nymphaio offers many choices. The shelter of ARCTUROS (NGO for the protection of brown bears) is located in a natural beech forest and hosts ten bears formerly in captivity. Another interesting place to visit is the picturesque Goldsmith, Folklore and History Museum, which includes authentic local furniture, traditional tools for jewelry making, and, of course, jewels.
