Vanishing Cyprus: Long Road to Reunification

Nicosia cyprusThe Anastasiades government is determined to resolve the Cyprus issue one way or another. This is probably an IMF EU-Troika mnimonio memorandum condition that no politician dares to talk about openly. It is not certain, but public sentiment indicates there is something mysterious cooking and Cypriots will soon be faced with another dubious “Annan plan” type of solution.
The introduction of this apartheid-induced BBF plan, offers the potential to keep two ancient indigenous peoples in semi-separate ethnic sectors centered on nationality, language and creed. This cannot be right in a modern democracy. Such a solution bares the hallmarks of apartheid and should never be allowed to formulate the basis of a Cyprus settlement. People’s race is not the enemy, however ignorance is, as is poor leadership and bad politics.
Today’s young generation, academia, organizations and social networking can change all that and play a leading role in the reunification of Cyprus. A mass Peace Movement for Cypriot Unity, free from dogmatism, can actually become the catalyst and help reunite the island where politicians have utterly failed. After forty years, a new multicultural Cyprus can rise from the ashes with a new Constitution, which will truly meet the needs of and serve all citizens, based on justice, citizenship, one person one vote, freedom of religion and the rule of law.
Let Nelson Mandela’s giant struggle for justice be the guiding beacon for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, so that they may work together as one people and finally produce a miracle of unity. In fact, it is time to stop burning our children on the altar of our hatred and build a new Cyprus for all citizens in this beautiful land of ours!
“I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter. I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.” ― Nelson Mandela
