Former Greek Children's Hospital Chief On Bail

Haris TombouloglouThe former Board Chairman of the largest state children’s hospital in Greece, who was charged with demanding a bribe in return for approving a contract to help children with obesity,  has been released on bail after a long deposition.
Haris Tombouloglou must post a 150,000-euro bail and is forbidden to leave the country. He faces charges of soliciting a 25,000-euro bribe from an advertising firm that had secured a 190,000-euro contract to coordinate an information campaign for the child obesity programme.
Tombouloglou, 54, was arrested on Christmas Eve after he was allegedly handed the requested bribe in marked notes. He was fired from his hospital position and his full-time job at the National Bank of Greece.
The taped conversation was damning, with Tombouloglou reportedly saying, “What kind of an idiot would I be to have made a 190,000-euro deal and not kept a cent for myself?”
Tombouloglou was also expelled from the ruling New Democracy party, in which he had been active as a youth leader and a local government official.
