Man Commits Suicide in Thessaloniki to Avoid Arrest

thessaloniki-suicideA businessman ended his life in the center of Thessaloniki. The 56-year-old shot himself in the apartment in which he lived at 5 Georgiou Charalambous Street.
Earlier in the day police had gone to his home with a warrant for his arrest on outstanding fraud convictions.
When the man realized that the police were there to arrest him, he locked himself in the apartment and threatened to kill himself. The authorities were alerted immediately.
Forces of the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (EKAM), firefighters and paramedics rushed to the area. They spread a protective net in front of his home in case he decided to jump off the balcony. At 3.15pm a single gunshot was heard from the apartment. The police special forces entered the property and found the man dead.
