Greek Hero Dies

theodoros kallinos
Theodoros Kallinos, historic figure on Crete and hero of the Resistance, has died aged 100. He was a legend in the Cretan resistance and led a battalion in the victorious battle of Kopsas.
According to his narrations, when he stepped on Cretan soil he presented himself before the commander and asked to be in charge of any division, but unfortunately his request was denied. In just one week he managed to gather a troupe of 150-160 soldiers and went back to the commander who couldn’t believe his eyes. When Kallinos asked for guns he was given only a few rifles.
Shortly after, he was ordered to undertake a mission to reach a strategic position where he could cover the eastern side of the Heraklion area from possible air and sea attack.
Theodore Kallinos was born in 1914 in Taritsani, Elassona in the prefecture of Larissa, Greece. In September 1935 he passed his exams and entered the National Technical University of Athens and the Greek Military Academy.
He fought but never surrendered in Kali Fort. He was a volunteer troupe commander in the Battle of Crete in May 1941. He participated and led the resistance against the German invasion at the hill of Kopsas, northeast of Heraklion.
Theodore Kallinos was buried Friday at noon in Thessaloniki, at the Agios Panteleimon Church in Kalamaria.
