Greece Imports Carnations for Bouzoukia

bouzoukiaIt appears that despite the crisis in Greece, nightclubs known as “bouzoukia” are still popular among Greeks who spend their money throwing carnations at their favorite singers as a token of admiration.
Every week at least one truck carrying 500,000 flowers sets off from Konstantinoupoli, crossing the border at Evros and arriving in the Greek city of Thessaloniki, to supply nightclubs and funeral parlors across northern Greece.
As reported in the Greek newspaper Dimokratia, nightclubs in Greece are filled with flowers from Turkey.  This has caused a strong reaction by the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, Anthimos, who highlights that while many Greeks are suffering due to the financial crisis, others are spending their money in nightclubs. “During the Christmas period, 20 trucks transporting flowers crossed into Greece,” said the bishop.
According to a flower trader from Thessaloniki, carnations are purchased either from Turkey or the island of Crete. He said that Turkish businessmen have built huge glasshouses where they cultivate carnations for export, mostly to Greece.
