Beetroot Designed Greek Presidency Logo

Greek presidency logoCould it ever be possible for a beetroot to turn upside down the world of design and to gain the respect of the European Union?
In fact, it is! Beetroot creative design group from Thessaloniki, Greece, was selected from among other companies and commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to design the logo and associated visual identity of the Greek Presidency of the European Union. The project cost a total of 10,000 Euros.
Each country holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union selects its own Presidency logo, which serves as an integral visual symbol defining its Presidency and a statement to Europe and the world.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs came to us. We wanted to design a simple but serious logo that will communicate the Greek Presidency message to everybody through a picture,” stated Alexandros Nikou, designer and founding member of the Beetroot group.
The Greek Presidency logo is austere and concise, extending a note of realistic optimism. It depicts a boat in full sail, formed by the initials of the European Union.
Beetroot groupThe three friends and classmates, Alexandros, Giannis and Vangelis, having completed their studies in designing, decided in the year 2000 to create the Beetroot design company in Thessaloniki, Greece. They chose the name of the company from the book Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins. In the introduction of the book is an ode to the beetroot and an explanation of what makes it superior to other vegetables.
The company undertakes illustration, photography, interactive design, motion graphics and other design related services. It has a wide range of clients, from small companies who want to promote their products and services, to Greek cultural organizations.
