Commissioners Reding and Malmström Visit Greece

Reding-MalmströmThe Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner responsible for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Viviane Reding, along with the Commissioner responsible for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström, are visiting Athens, Greece, to join the two unofficial Councils of EU Ministers for Justice and Home Affairs. This takes place on January 23 and 24 at Zappeion and is organized as part of the Greek EU Presidency. The meeting will focus on Greek Presidency priorities as well as the case of Christodoulos Xeros and terrorism in general.
On Wednesday January 22, Vice President Reding met with the Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights, Charalambos Athanassiou. Among other issues they were scheduled to discuss the circumstances in which prisoners in Greece are granted licensed leave, as well as terrorism which has been a thorn in the side of successive governments over the past three or so decades.
“The unofficial Councils of EU Ministers in Athens under the Greek Presidency which takes place this week will focus on two very important issues, Justice (chaired by Charalambos Athanassiou) and Home Affairs (chaired by Nikos Dendias, Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection). Reding and Malmström are both determined to make significant and essential changes in their responsible sectors before the end of the current Commission’s term of office on October 31, 2014. Data protection after recent revelations concerning transatlantic spying, along with border security and immigration will be on the agenda of subsequent meetings. I hope that we will be able to find essential solutions for the problems and that we will further promote European cooperation and solidarity,” said Panagiotis Karvounis.
