One Out of Two Greeks Lives With Parents

LivingWithParentsA recent survey conducted in the European countries has shown that many young people between the ages of 20 to 34-years-old live with their parents. In Greece the phenomenon has become more intense during the last years because of increasing unemployment which doesn’t allow young people to leave their parental home and live on their own.
According to the survey, Slovakia has the biggest percentage of young adults living with their parents (56.6%), followed by Bulgaria with (52.%) and Greece with (51.6%). The highest rate of young and unemployed who still live with their family was recorded in Greece, Italy, Sweden and Ireland. The highest rate of young employees who continue to live in their parents homes was recorded in Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia, Portugal, Spain and Greece. While lower rates were recorded among the French, Finns, Danes, Belgians, Luxembourgers and Cypriots.
The countries with the lowest rates of young adults living with their parents were Sweden with 4.1%, Finland with 4% and Denmark with just 1.8%.
The main factors that can explain this phenomenon is unemployment, low salaries and the high prices of homes.  However many young people don’t decide to live on their own as they don’t want to take on responsibilities. Others claim that they will leave their parental house when married.
