Greek Farmers Setting up Roadblocks

Greek farmers are prepared to escalate their struggles starting Monday February 3. Representatives of the farmers had a meeting with the Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Athanasios Tsaftaris to discuss a series of matters and demands (taxation, production cost).
The farmers have made it crystal clear that they are not going to sit around and do nothing. Tomorrow they will decide on setting roadblocks everywhere, starting from Monday. The farmers are pointing to the high taxation, the increase in the VAT rate and in the production cost, as well as the low producer prices as the main reasons for their struggle.
During the meeting between farmers from Argolida and the Minister of Rural Development and Food, the destruction in citrus production and the high taxation was discussed.
They said to the Greek Minister, that the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) must compensate them for the destruction caused to their production due to bad weather. They also called Mr. Tsaftaris to activate the de minimis rule of the EU for all the citrus producers.
The Greek farmers said that the Greek government’s promises are not enough. They are determined to set up roadblocks across Greece using tractors and other machineries as part of protest against the Greek government’s strict policy.
