Greek Police: Kalashnikovs Found in car in Athens 'Clear'

Greece_Car-Full-of-WeaponsAccording to the Greek police authorities, the ballistic examination of the three Kalashnikov rifles that were found on Saturday in a stolen car in Palaio Faliro, Athens, Greece, showed they have not been used in previous terrorist attacks or other criminal activities. The Counterterrorism Department is hoping to detect DNA traces or fingerprints in the car.
Apart from the three Kalashnikov rifles, the police had found one RPG, three rockets, four hand grenades and a large number of rounds. Greek police estimates that this case is related to the escape of terrorist Christodoulos Xeros as the car was stolen on January 1 when Xeros was on leave. RPG rockets were used in the past by the terrorist organization November 17.
Police had spotted the car when patrolling the area near the New Democracy headquarters. After reports of a Special Anti-Terrorist Unit that the party’s headquarters were being targeted, police were led to the stolen car that was parked nearby.
The car was under surveillance for 10 days, while police officers were waiting for the suspects to approach it. However, no one showed up. The police estimates that the terrorist found out that the car had been identified and monitored and changed their plans.
The Counterterrorism Unit has sounded the alarm as there are fears of a new terrorist attack in Greece.
