Greek Reform Minister Calls for Fewer MPs, Smaller Electoral Districts in Athens

kuriakos-mitsotakisA change in the electoral law calling for fewer deputies, the breaking up of Athens into smaller electoral districts and the better management of political funding are priorities if more transparency is to be achieved in political life, Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said late on Friday at the “Oser la Democratie” (Dare Democracy) congress in Athens, Greece.
The congress began on Thursday at the Athens Concert Hall; it is organized by the magazine Le Nouvel Observateur and Kathimerini newspaper in Athens.
“In smaller electoral districts, contact with citizens defines the rules of political survival, while in larger (districts) there are other considerations, such as the possibility of access to mass media,” Mitsotakis said, adding that “reducing the number of deputies and regulating election cycles are issues that must be brought to the table.”
Speaking about corruption in public administration, Mitsotakis said that “both the stick and the carrot are necessary,” referring to systematic controls, simplifying processes, reducing bureaucracy and keeping transparency by publishing decisions online, on the Diavgeia platform.
Mitsotakis, whose ministry is at the forefront of public sector reform, spoke of significant process being made at meting justice in the public sector, which has also been reiterated separately by former Supreme Court judge and chairman of the anti-corruption committee Ioannis Tentes speaking of the excellent working relationship he has with Mitsotakis.
According to sources, the minister has taken the initiative to address this coming week the Parliament’s Special Committee on Institutions and Transparency on disciplinary justice in the public sector.
