4 People Arrested for Trafficking Bulgarian Children in Greece

child traffickingFour Bulgarians, two women, 40 and 54 years old and two men 38 and 39 years old, were arrested on Tuesday, February 19, in Athens, Greece. They were members of a child trafficking circuit. A 31-year-old woman is also wanted by Greek police, for being their accomplice.
In early February, the 40-year woman was babysitting the 15-day-old infant of a 38-year-old woman from Bulgaria. When the latter went to the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki to arrange for some traveling papers for her child, the 40-year-old Bulgarian stole the infant and gave it to her accomplice, in order to sell it for the price of 6,500 euros.
A few days later, the 54-year-old and 31-year-old women visited a notary, where the latter presented herself as the birth mother of the infant, to sign a special power of attorney – a statement providing consent for the child’s adoption.
Greek police have located the infant’s adoptive parents and the child will be returned to his real birth mother.
Further investigation showed that ten days earlier the 31-year-old woman had approached a couple from Bulgaria, who were expecting, offering them accommodation and asking if they are interested in selling their child when it was born.
The 54-year-old woman had repeatedly brought pregnant Bulgarian women to Greece and when they gave birth, would sell the infants.
The two men were in charge of protecting the circuit and their role was mainly to threaten the parents, so they wouldn’t complain or take any legal action against the circuit.
The Greek Police Subdivision for Protection of Minors, arrested the two women and later found the men trying to evacuate the apartments where they used to keep the pregnant women until they gave birth.
