economic crimeGreek Police have bust a crime ring dealing in fraud, extortion and blackmail, in Crete. Businessmen from the island and a well-known lawyer were part of the ring and it is estimated that their fraud amounted to 17 million euros.
According to local media, this is one of the largest and most serious economic crimes that has ever taken place on the island.
The police, in collaboration with the Economic Police (YPOADIE), found that members of the criminal organization had set up fake tourism businesses, and it is estimated that they embezzled nearly three million euros from the Greek state and 14 million euros from individuals.
According to Greek news reports, one of the front-men of the organization was working for a short time as a Public Power Corporation (PPC) employee, and in recent years had started working as an executive in the offices of various politicians and MPs in Crete and elsewhere in Greece.
At dawn today dozens of armed police raided the houses of people suspected of involvement in the crime ring, in Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos and Messara.
So far six members of the organization have been arrested, and police investigations are continuing.
