Only 16 out of 100 Unemployed Receiving Unemployment Benefit

PData concerning the subsidizing of the unemployed released on Friday, March 7, by the Manpower Employment Organization (OAED) reveals the inability of the state to provide adequate protection and support for the unemployed. According to OAED, in January, only 16% of the unemployed received unemployment benefit.
The figures released show that in January, the number of Greek citizens registered with OAED in order to find a job, amounted to 854,659 people. Of these, 49.50% (423,025) had been registered for a period equal to or longer than 12 months, and 50.50% (431,634) were registered for less than 12 months.
25.41% (217,133 people) of unemployed are under 30 years old, 62.86% (537,199 people) belong to the 30 – 54 age group, while 11.74% (100.327 persons) are over 55 years old.
The number of unemployed without education amounts to 1.36% (11,653 persons). 414,865 people (48.54%) have received a secondary education, while unemployed persons who have received a higher education number 135,443 (15.85%).
The rise in unemployment is one of the major problems facing the Greek government. Unemployment in Greece stands at 27.4%, while youth unemployment (people aged under 25) has reached a record high of 61.4%. Greek unemployment is more than twice the average rate in the euro zone.
The highest unemployment rates in the EU-28 in September were recorded in Greece (27.4%), Spain (26.7%), Croatia (18.6%) and Cyprus (17.3%), with the lowest in Austria (4.8%), Germany (5.2%) and Luxembourg (6.1%).
