Ship Runs Aground off Greek Island Mykonos

Yusuf-Cepnioglou-Turkish-Ship-MykonosEnvironmental inspectors with the Greek Coast Guard have been dispatched to the Greek island of Mykonos, located in the Aegean Sea, to inspect a Turkish-flagged vessel that ran aground last Friday night and which is said to contain 200 tons of fuel.
The “Yusuf Cepnioglu,” which was on route between Izmir and Tunisia carrying 204 cargo containers, was abandoned by its crew after it ran into rocks off the coast of north Mykonos  and began taking on water. All 14 members of the crew were reported to be safe and in good health and are being kept for further investigation on the Greek island.
According to reports, the ship owner company has been asked to submit its freight manifest, so as to find if any dangerous cargo was on board.
The stranded container ship remains pinned to the rocks, coast guard authorities reported on Monday, adding that there are concerns that strong winds and waves may cause some of its cargo to become loose and cause a spill near one of Greece’s most popular island destinations.
Strong winds and waves, which continue to burden any extensive operations and investigation on the ship’s situation, have already caused a few containers to become detached from the ship’s holds. The shipper has already commissioned operations on salvaging the vessel and protecting the marine environment. The vessels of the specialized company, which has been tasked with the project, has already sailed to the area with proper equipment.
A joint operation to tow the container to safety and ensure that there is no leakage is currently under way.
